Agarwals of the World

We have observed that members of the Agarwal Community have interest in their history, ideology, social customs and practices. Almost all the cities and districts in India have Agarwal Associations which are engaged in various social services. Agrasen Jayanti is celebrated every year. There is however lack of any worthwhile literature on the community.

Agarwals are Vaish as per broad division of Hindu Society. They are pretty large and enterprising community. Vaish is a very wide and comprehensive term covering several business communities such as Agarwal, Khandelwal, Maheshwari, Rastogi, Oswal, Jaiswal, Porwal, Mahajan, Gupta etc. Agarwals are the largest among all of them.

The correct word for Agrawals is 'Agrawal' but is written in many ways such as Agarwal,Aggarwal, Agarwala etc.Meaning of the word 'Agr' is `in the forefront'. It is also believed that Agarwals came to be known as such as all along they have been front-ranking people.

Agarwals are the sons of great Maharaja Agrasen Maharaj who ruled over Agroha some 5000 years ago. It is believed that Agroha was having a population of one lakh people. And all of them were having one house of their own and atleast one lakh rupees in store. Maharaja Agrasen never liked his people to be poor. He had a great scheme so that no one in his kingdom could remain poor. Whenever someone from outside joined his kingdom all the native people will give him one rupee and provide him with one brick. This way he will construct his house and also become a lakhpati. Such novel scheme was the root cause of the fact that no agarwal was a poor person in his kingdom.
If we take into account number of agarwals in the Maharaja's kingdom which was one lakh and estimate the pesent day number of agarwals in the world keeping into account the mortality rate at various times, the number comes to sixteen crores. WHERE ARE THESE SIXTEEN CRORE OF AGARWALS ?

Family deity of Agarwals is Mahalakshmi, the goddes of wealth.
